Leadership in Giving Back

“Give Back” is one of our nine Company Values established by our founder, Barc Simpson. He said, “No matter what each of our personal situations is, we know that there are many others in this world who will never have the opportunities we’ve had. It is our responsibility to reach out, in whatever manner we can, to support others. We’re all connected in some way and are all part of a greater community. It’s important to make what impact you can. . . . Look for small ways to give back every day. Help out your neighbor, make time for others, do what you can.”

Along with making a positive impact in our communities, service programs benefit our workforce. Studies show that most employees want an opportunity to volunteer alongside their peers. Companies that engage employees through such programs generally see better attraction and retention rates, especially with millennials. One study found that employees who engaged in corporate charitable giving programs tended to have 75% longer tenures with the company (Nonprofits Source 2018).

As the leader in engineered structural connectors and building solutions, Simpson Strong-Tie is committed to being a leader in giving back as well. Our company and dedicated employees make this commitment in many ways.

We are a key partner with Habitat for Humanity, International, providing monetary and product donations, as well as technical expertise and volunteers. Since we started our partnership with them, Simpson Strong-Tie has donated more than $8 million to Habitat’s mission of helping families build safe, affordable homes. We are also the main sponsor of the Habitat Strong program, which helps local Habitat organizations throughout the country build homes that are more durable, resilient and safe. We provide relief to victims of natural disasters, through donations to the American Red Cross and other organizations, to help individuals and families on the road to recovery.

Our annual signature program called “Do What You Can Day” has our facilities worldwide coordinating giving-back activities on the same day throughout the company. Not only does this have an incredible impact on our communities, it also gives employees the opportunity to build connections with their coworkers.

Through our Barc Simpson Community Hero Award, the company also recognizes employees who demonstrate outstanding volunteerism on behalf of nonprofit organizations, providing a cash donation to the recipients’ organizations of choice. Since the award was created in 2015, 20 employees have been honored for their exceptional contributions in a variety of areas.

Our Matching Gift donation program, various office blood, toy and food drives, scholarship programs and other activities also provide benefits to our communities, our employees and our company. We are proud of our continued commitment and leadership in giving back and hope you’ll be inspired to do the same in whatever way you can.
