Erin Nichols is a proud member of the sales team here at Simpson Strong-Tie. She shares the story of how her career journey unfolded and how she encourages other women in sales to follow this career path, too.
I am a new Dealer Sales Representative, Residential, in the Central Florida market. I previously worked selling building materials, mostly masonry products, and it was there I learned about Simpson Strong-Tie products when I began selling connectors to some of my customers. Prior to that I was selling commercial landscape products. I’ve had some wonderful experiences and am happy that they’ve led me where I am today. I’m a single mom of twin boys who keep me on my toes. I enjoy time with my family and friends, exercising and being outside — especially beach time with my paddleboard.

One of our nine company values is Relentless Customer Focus. Our founder Barclay Simpson said “No matter what your position in the company, it’s vital that you keep the customers and users in mind whether you have direct contact or not. What do they need from you? How can you improve their lives?” Matt Anderson, our Inside Sales Manager at our McKinney, Texas branch, has been living that value for nearly 20 years. We asked Matt to share his career journey with Simpson Strong-Tie and explain what “relentless customer focus” means to him. Continue reading “What Does Relentless Customer Focus Mean? An Inside Sales Manager’s Perspective”

Last week concluded Simpson Strong-Tie’s 2022 International Sales Meeting. HR Coordinator Kayla Wells attended ISM and shared her experience connecting with others, as well as her surprise at the growing number of women on our sales team.
I started with Simpson in March 2020 as the Human Resources Coordinator, and I’m still in that position. Eventually, I look to expand my HR career here as I develop myself and those around me. Last week, I was honored to attend the annual Simpson Strong-Tie International Sales Meeting (ISM) in San Antonio, Texas. Although I’m not in Sales, I received the ECSS (Excellence in Customer Service Support) award for the first half of 2021 at my branch here in Columbus, so I was invited to attend.

March 8, 2022 is International Women’s Day. This year’s theme is “Break the Bias” which asks participants to imagine a gender equal world. Simpson Strong-Tie Engineering Supervisor for the Southwest United States, Rachel Holland, shares her story of being a woman in engineering and how she works to create change in her field by mentoring young women interested in STEM.
When I was young, no one mentioned how rare female engineers were. Perhaps I didn’t do my research to figure that out on my own. In fairness, though, there tended to be an equal number of female and male students in the classes I took in high school. However, by day one as an architectural engineering freshman at Cal Poly SLO, I could already tell the vast majority of my classmates for the next five years were going to be boys. Therefore, that was a big change — and a telling clue about my future career path.

Every February, the National Society of Professional Engineers honors the profession of engineering during Engineers Week. The goal of Engineers Week is to “celebrate how engineers make a difference in our world.” Engineers are the foundation of Simpson Strong-Tie, and we appreciate our engineering team daily. At the Simpson Strong-Tie branch in McKinney, Texas, Inside Sales Supervisor Rebecca Heckel shares a longstanding tradition of an Ornament Decorating contest that takes place every year. This year was no exception.
We’re not sure how far back the McKinney Branch Ornament Decorating contest goes — definitely as far back as 2008. We have pictures from ’08 that document the ingenuity and creativity of our Simpson Strong-Tie employees. The year 2021 upheld the tradition. Like a surprising number of my teammates, I had no construction or manufacturing experience when I interviewed here. In fact, I hadn’t even heard of Simpson Strong-Tie before I was told their marketing department was looking for a copy editor. But after I read a little bit about the company on its website and talked to a few of the employees, I knew almost immediately I could be at home here.
