Rolling Up Our Sleeves: My First Volunteer Event with Simpson Strong-Tie

This year, our branch in Riverside, California, had the privilege of partnering with Lennar and HomeAid Inland Empire for Operation Grace — an initiative dedicated to addressing homelessness in San Bernardino by providing emergency shelters, transitional housing and supportive services that help families regain stability. Hear from warehouse manager and volunteer Fernando Cabrera as he shares his experience participating in this meaningful event.

I’m Fernando Cabrera, warehouse manager at Simpson Strong-Tie’s Riverside branch since July 2024. I manage all daily operations for the warehouse, ensure full alignment with our union contract and push for higher efficiency and a stronger safety culture. I also focus on sharpening our warehouse leadership team into highly effective, accountable leaders with the Nine Principles of Business developed by our company founder, Barc Simpson, guiding the way. I heard about this volunteer event from Jonathan Freeman, manager and regional product specialist at Simpson Strong-Tie. Giving back is one of Barc’s Principles and a core value for me personally, so I’m eager to take on opportunities like this.

I joined the Riverside team for my first volunteer event with Simpson Strong-Tie, partnering with Lennar and HomeAid Inland Empire for Operation Grace. The goal of Operation Grace is to help turn a San Bernardino property into an emergency shelter for women and children. This is something that will make a real difference for families who need a safe place while they rebuild.

Our job for the day wasn’t complicated, but it was solid, physical work. We spent the day sweeping, shoveling dirt, picking up demo debris and hauling everything out in a wheelbarrow. It was a good reminder that even basic tasks matter. And while it was just one day for us, there are people who do this kind of work every day and seeing that up close really makes you respect it.

What stood out most was the way our Riverside crew showed up. Everyone was ready to work, no complaints, just a team willing to get in there and get the job done. It was a great feeling being part of that and seeing everyone pulling their weight and staying focused on why we were there, providing a safe temporary shelter for women and children until they can get transition back into safe, more permanent living situations. Since 1990, HomeAid has renovated or built 50 similar facilities, with a total of 1,218 beds, across the Inland Empire.

For me, it was a solid first volunteer experience with Simpson Strong-Tie. I enjoy giving back, and this was the kind of hands-on work I don’t mind doing. I’m glad I got the chance to be part of it, and I’m looking forward to the next opportunity to get out and help again.
