How E-Z Spike™ Created a Safe Perimeter for Rogue Engineer’s Chickens

DIY an EZ Garden Fence with Rogue Engineer

Simpson Strong-Tie collaborated with Jamison Rantz, aka Rogue Engineer, on a chicken coop upgrade project. Originally, Jamison’s coop had used cheap fencing to contain the chickens while allowing them to roam. Over time, the deteriorating fencing prompted him to give it a makeover. He successfully constructed a new, easy-to-build DIY custom garden fence that securely holds the chickens and complements the coops aesthetic. Learn how Simpson Strong-Tie connectors and fasteners played a crucial role in the project’s quick construction process.

The Initial Challenge

Five years ago, Jamison constructed a chicken coop to accommodate his growing flock of chickens. Over time, however, the fence that enclosed the chicken run began to deteriorate. Taking matters into his own hands, Jamison embarked on a DIY project to upgrade the fence and create a brand-new enclosure. Using Simpson Strong Tie E-Z Spike™ post base spikes APRTA Rigid Tie® angles, and Outdoor Accents® connector screws, he documented the entire process, showcasing how our hardware facilitated the quick and straightforward construction of a welded wire garden fence with a gate. Despite the size of the fence, Jamison managed to complete the entire project within a single day.

Building the Fence

Jameson called on E-Z Spike post spikes to simplify the task of setting fence posts. With these spikes, he effortlessly placed the posts at the desired locations, ensuring they were level and securely hammered into the ground. The posts were then attached to the spikes using our Outdoor Accents connector screw, providing a strong and stable foundation for the fence.

Next, Jamison measured and cut the stretchers for the top and bottom of the fence. Using a Kreg XL pocket hole jig and Outdoor Accents connector screws, he drilled pocket holes in the ends of the two-by-fours. This method ensured a secure and robust joint, vital for the fence’s structural integrity. After installing the stretchers, he added a five-quarter inch deck board as a top cap, giving the fence a polished finish.

Installing the Gate

For the gate construction, Jamison opted for a sturdy frame made of two-by-fours. He used APRTA Rigid Tie angles, attaching them to each corner of the gate. This choice guaranteed that the gate would remain sag-free over time. To further reinforce the gate, two-by-twos were added to provide a secure attachment point for the wire mesh.

Installing Welded Wire Mesh

To complete the fence, Jamison installed a four-by-two-by-four wire mesh on the inside. This mesh was secured to the fence using staples, ensuring the chickens would remain safely contained within their designated area. To finish, he added a small privacy fence to conceal a bright blue water barrel, effectively blending it into the surroundings.

Final Transformation

Jamison successfully transformed his chicken run by upgrading a worn-out fence and building a new custom fence. The installation process was made easy with the help of E-Z Spike post spikes, while the secure connections of the APRTA Rigid Tie angles and Outdoor Accents connector screws ensured a sturdy and visually appealing result. Jamison’s project serves as inspiration for those seeking garden fence ideas or reliable solutions for their construction projects.
