Jen was inspired to create a space where friends could come together and connect. Her vision was to transform the backyard of some good friends of hers who were pillars of the community—always opening their home to others. She wanted to transform their backyard into a welcoming haven for gatherings and fun. To bring this vision to life, she decided to upgrade the space with a cozy firepit for nighttime fires and a pergola swing where everyone could relax and enjoy each other’s company around the fire.

The project started with clearing and grading the area, followed by laying a solid patio using pavers from a circular design kit. Once the base was ready, Jen and her husband, Adam, turned their attention to constructing the pergola. For this part, Jen utilized cedar posts and beams and Simpson Strong-Tie® decorative hardware. Having used our Outdoor Accents® line before on other projects like building a southwest inspired pergola or DIY hammock turned movie screen, Jen was familiar with how our black powder-coated connectors and fasteners handed both strength and beauty to any outdoor structure. The result was a pergola that was not only beautiful but built to last.

One of the trickiest parts of the build was notching the posts to fit the beams securely. With careful measurements, Jen and Adam ensured everything fit perfectly, despite some challenges with the angles and dimensions of the posts. To hang the swings, they used Simpson Strong-Tie’s Strong-Drive® SDWS™ Timber screws , which offer a secure connection while also installing very easily.

The final result was a stunning transformation — a practical and beautiful way to give back to neighbors who have been pillars in their local community. Jen’s careful planning and the support from Simpson Strong-Tie made the entire project easy to build and built to endure. This backyard makeover is proof that, with the right tools and materials, anyone can create a special, long-lasting space in their own home.
