Do What You Can Day 2025: Employees Supporting Communities Worldwide

With more than 25 participating locations, employees contributed more than a thousand volunteer hours across the globe, making a meaningful impact on the people and organizations they served. Each year, Do What You Can Day reminds us that even small actions, when taken together, can create meaningful change. This annual event honors our founder Barclay Simpson’s guiding principle: “We’re all connected in some way and are all part of a greater community … Help out your neighbor, make time for others, do what you can.” 

Following are some highlights from our participating North American locations that served and supported their communities in an array of give-back initiatives. 

Across the US:

Atlanta, GA: Building Benches

Atlanta, GA: 14 employees at the Kennesaw warehouse dedicated their time to building benches for a local park and donated dog treats and toys to the Atlanta Humane Society.Columbus, OH

Columbus, OH: The Columbus branch embraced the spirit of Do What You Can Day with a variety of hands-on projects supporting their local community. Employees built bikes for underserved youth through Toys for Tots, crafted DIY pet toys for Columbus Humane, created bracelets and IV bag decorations for cancer patients at Ronald McDonald House, and assembled candy bags for care packages with Soldiers’ Angels. Each activity reflected teamwork, creativity and compassion, demonstrating how small acts of kindness can have a real impact across many communities.

Denver, CO

Denver, CO: Simpson team members in the Denver area built modular homes to support Habitat for Humanity of Denver at their Boulder facility, an effort that totaled 60 hours of volunteer collaboration.

Gallatin, TN: Gallatin employees supported Sleep in Heavenly Peace’s mission to ensure that no child sleeps on the floor by building 30 beds for youth in need.

High Point, NC: An engaged group of 20 team members at the High Point warehouse supported DWYCD by collecting necessary school supplies for Greenwood Christian Academy.

Inner Grove Heights, MN; Jessup, MD; and Enfield, CT: Team members from the Inner Grove Heights, Jessup and Enfield locations worked together to make military care packages a little bit sweeter for active service members by creating candy bags to place inside these heartfelt gift packages, which supported the Soldiers’ Angels nonprofit.

Jacksonville, FL: 28 employees at the Jacksonville warehouse packed 300 care packages for the Northeast Florida Women & Children’s Homeless Shelter.  

Lafayette, IN: Lafayette employees supported multiple nonprofits in the community, including the Wabash River Enhancement Corporation, Niches Land Trust, Salvation Army of Lafayette, and Food Finders Food Bank Fresh Market. Their collective impact efforts involved a variety of volunteer tasks ranging from winter coat distribution and grocery store stocking to trail maintenance and fence removal.

McKinney, TX: in support of the Austin Street Center, a homeless shelter in Dallas, TX,  117 employees created Welcome Home baskets containing essential supplies for community members experiencing homelessness to help them transition into a new home of their own,. Additionally, the McKinney branch packaged over 500 nutritional snack bags for the shelter to distribute to those in need. Food items were also donated to the McKinney Free Little Pantry to aid those affected by the reduction in SNAP funding.

Mobile, AL: 20 employees at the Mobile warehouse packed 200 individual drawstring backpacks filled with hygiene items and donated them to the Waterfront Mission, a nonprofit that helps people transition out of homelessness, poverty and addiction.   

Pleasanton, CA: Over the course of two full build days, 25 employees dedicated a collective 150 volunteer hours to support Habitat for Humanity East Bay / Silicon Valley’s affordable housing development, Sequoia Grove, in Hayward, CA, which is Habitat’s greenest development to date.

Remote Employees: A group of remote employees contributed 30 hours of collective volunteer work by participating in an innovative and collaborative business challenge developed by SuitUp to inspire and brainstorm with high school students from a Title I school. Participating employees coached and judged student pitches related to disaster relief and recovery, which is one of Simpson’s core giving priorities.

Riverside, CA: Employees from our Riverside branch assembled hygiene kits for Warrior for Children, a nonprofit that provides care and connection for youth experiencing trauma. The kits will go to foster children in need, offering everyday essentials and a reminder that their community cares

Oxnard, CA, USA: Oxnard employees assembled 15 hygiene bags for the Rescue Mission Alliance’s Lighthouse for Women and Children, which focuses on support for their transition out of homelessness to stability.

Las Vegas, NV, USA: Eight Las Vegas team created hygiene kits for the Children’s Foundation of Las Vegas, which furthers their work to address the unmet needs of children who are in and have aged out of foster care in Clark County.  

Kapolei, HI, USA: In support of Child & Family Service, the Kapolei team assembled children’s tote bags with an assortment of essential hygiene and creative crafts items. Their work drives impact for Child & Family Service as they work to strengthen families and foster healthy development of children across the state of Hawaii.

Chandler, AZ, USA: Chandler employees supported a local nonprofit, House of Refuge, Inc., by assembling kits for families experiencing homelessness to navigate their transition to stability, healing, and hope.

Stockton, CA: The Stockton branch hosted its annual Do What You Can Day in a trade show–style format, connecting employees with five nonprofit causes focused on family support, basic needs and global impact. Together, employees assembled 400 hygiene kits, 40 family enrichment packs and 100 water filters; donated 21 cases of diapers and a bin of food items; and contributed a total of 320 volunteer hours. The event provided a meaningful opportunity to learn from local partners, see their work firsthand and make a lasting difference in the community.

West Chicago, IL: 75 West Chicago employees contributed hundreds of hours creating 102 kits for local underserved children through the EduCare Foundation, an educational and youth-focused nonprofit that provides afterschool programming.

Canada:

Brampton, Ontario, Canada: Brampton employees created care packages for the Family Transition Place, a shelter supporting women’s journeys to stable housing.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada: Calgary employees volunteered at the Calgary Drop-In Centre, a nonprofit organization that supports community members experiencing or at risk of homelessness through housing, shelter and health programs.

Pitt Meadows, BC, Canada: Pitt Meadows employees built kits for NICU patients and parents in support of the British Columbia Children’s Hospital.

And here are a few of the highlights from our participating global branches outside of North America: 

Australia: Our Simpson Strong-Tie Australia team, joined by two key business customers, volunteered at Foodbank Australia’s Glendenning warehouse to pack 660 Christmas hampers — nine tons of food providing more than 16,000 meals for families in need. Volunteers worked along the packing line, gaining firsthand insight into food insecurity and making a meaningful contribution to the community. This hands-on effort reflects our ongoing commitment to giving back and supporting those who need it most. 

Chile: Team members in Chile put our value of ‘Give Back’ into action by preparing and delivering aid materials to Albergue Gandarillas — Puente Alto, a shelter that supports individuals experiencing homelessness. The visit offered a meaningful opportunity to connect with residents and reflect on the power of compassion: “Giving doesn’t always mean having a lot; it means doing what you can to make a difference.”

Germany: Simpson employees based in Germany participated in a variety of renovation-related service work to support local nonprofit organizations. 

Switzerland: For this year’s DWYCD, members of the Switzerland team spent a full day supporting the Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festival (ESAF) by volunteering at a food stand, serving fresh sausages to visitors, participants and fellow volunteers. This iconic event, held every three years for 130 years, draws around 350,000 attendees and relies on over 8,000 volunteers to bring the festival to life. Our colleagues’ efforts helped ensure the event’s success, with all proceeds and tips being donated to charitable causes.

United Kingdom: A group of team members from the United Kingdom spent the day at Birds Bush Primary School in Tamworth, refreshing the school’s outdoor spaces with new planters, fresh paint and a creative new mud pit for students to enjoy. The project brought together teamwork and community spirit to create spaces that inspire children to play, learn and grow.

Viet Nam: In October, Enterprise Service Viet Nam (ESVN) embodied the spirit of giving by supporting two meaningful organizations: Dak O Commune in Dong Nai province and two care homes in Cu Chi, Ho Chi Minh City. Team members organized a traditional mid-autumn celebration for children in Dak O, distributing 400 mooncakes, 86 essential packages and a donation to the local school, while also building a small playground and providing clothes and gifts to families in need. Later in the month, ESVN volunteers visited the Congregation of Mother of Charity Care Home and Thien Phuoc Nhan Ai Orphanage, delivering food, milk, hygiene products, health insurance cards for elderly residents, and donations to support ongoing care.
