As mass timber continues to grow in the commercial construction industry, so does the environment for innovation. With many projects increasing in size and complexity, larger structural dimensions result in higher loads. At the same time, developers, architects and occupants want to retain all the remarkable benefits of a mass timber project, including the value of an all-wood aesthetic. New designs call for new products, technology and services to build them.
Hidden connection with higher loads
To preserve the look of mass timber beams while meeting high-capacity needs, the engineers at Simpson Strong-Tie developed the HSKP heavy seated knife plate. Offering the highest load ratings yet in our line of concealed beam hangers, the HSKP is tested for drift and ICC code listed for 22–32 kips. Its hidden end-grain connection also achieves a two-hour fire-resistance rating.
“The HSKP heavy seated knife plate is a tested, high-capacity and easy-to-install connector designed to accommodate the challenges and accentuate the beauty of mass timber construction. It’s a strong addition that complements our existing line of end-grain concealed beam hangers for this growing market.” -Thom Murphy, Senior Product Manager
Saving time from factory to fit up
The HSKP typically is dry fitted on beams and columns in the shop or factory, using Strong-Drive® SDCF Timber-CF structural screws. This saves valuable time on the jobsite and allows generous fit-up tolerance for easy beam placement. Manufactured in the US, the HSKP is readily available through our nationwide distribution network. Like other solutions from Simpson Strong-Tie, the HSKP is backed by our expert service and technical support.
